Reparations of Colonialism

Reparation for Colonialism and Compensations

In 2002, Nelson Mandela, the first president of post-apartheid South Africa said that the formal colonial powers had the responsibility to financially assist South Africa
He Said "Africa doesn't want charity but financial assistance, because colonial powers exploited Africa
and it is the time they put those resources back into the development of the Continent"

The case for reparation is stronger than the case for reparations for the slave trade
Colonialism occurred recently, and the states that were colonial powers still exist, and the many individuals who lived under colonialism are still alive or their immediate descendants populate the Continent

Colonial Powers and Reparations

  • Years ago, Germany agreed to pay Namibia, for what European Union was agreed for colonial genocide.
  • The amount involved was less which is 1.1 billion dollars spread over 30 years spent on developmental projects and the reparation word was avoided
Germany's history in Namibia was brutal, but not unique. Local tribesmen were tortured, or driven into the Kalhari desert and left to die from dehydration.
Some of these techniques were used by Nazis were tried out in what was then called German South West-Africa
  • Joe Biden during his election campaign had supported creating a commission on reparations for African Americans
  • In a debate on reparations, Indian MP Shashi Tharoor gave a speech about what does Britain owe to India in terms of Monetary
  • American city Evanston in Illinois state began last year to pay an eventual total of $10 million in slavery reparations to a select few of its 12,000 to strong African-American Population

History of Reparations

  • Germany extracted it from French after the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-71—the sum equalled what Napolean had extracted from Prussia early in the Century
  • In return, All the allied powers extracted it from Germany after the World War-I
  • Germany also paid Israel Three billion over 14 years to compensate Jews killed or robbed during the Holocaust
  • France as the colonial power agreed after decades of fighting to let the rebels be if they paid three times the island's (Haiti) annual production as reparation
  • In the US-Civil War, emancipated slaves were persuaded to fight for the Union with the promise of 40 acres and a mule when the war ended-a promise was never honoured

Compensation

Compensatory payments are complicated because, how does anyone can calculate them in what terms. if it is distributed who gets how much
  1. For Large countries like China and India, no reparations can never be enough to make up for what was done to them
  2. When the small concession in climate or trade negotiations is grudgingly given, one can expect the payments that would measure up to justice
