Utkal divas
UTKAL DIVAS
Odisha has celebrated its 86th foundation day on 1st April as Utkal divas.
This is the day when 'Orissa' was established as a separate province in 1936 on a linguistic basis, after being detached from Bihar, the Madras presidency.
The Utkal region which taught non-violence to emperor Ashoka also holds a very important place in the freedom struggle of India.
In 1817, 40 years before the sepoy mutiny, an armed uprising shook the foundation of the British empire in eastern India which is known as the 'Paika rebellion.
Not only paika but the land of Odisha superheated several anti-colonial struggles including the Ganjam movement, Larja Kolh movement and Sambalpur war.
