Utkal divas

UTKAL DIVAS 

 
  • Odisha has celebrated its 86th foundation day on 1st April as Utkal divas.
  • This is the day when 'Orissa' was established as a separate province in 1936 on a linguistic basis, after being detached from Bihar, the Madras presidency.
  • The Utkal region which taught non-violence to emperor Ashoka also holds a very important place in the freedom struggle of India.
  • In 1817, 40 years before the sepoy mutiny, an armed uprising shook the foundation of the British empire in eastern India which is known as the 'Paika rebellion.
  • Not only paika but the land of Odisha superheated several anti-colonial struggles including the Ganjam movement, Larja Kolh movement and Sambalpur war.
