 Context:

All 198members of the United Nations unanimously adopted July 1, 2022, the Lisbon Declaration on ocean conservation
 

AIM:

To protect biodiversity in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction, which lie outside the 200mile exclusive economic zones of countries.

Location:

To implement the international treaty, the 5th round of negotiations will be held in New York from August 15-26, 2022.

Key Points:

  • The conference has set the stage for the 5th session of the intergovernmental conference on an instrument for the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas.
  • Developing countries, particularly small island developing states and least developed countries need assistance with capacity building.
  • 198 country participants at this conference agreed to work on preventing, reducing and controlling marine pollution.
  • Nutrient pollution, untreated wastewater, solid waste discharges, hazardous substances, and emissions from the maritime sector, including shipping, shipwrecks, and anthropogenic underwater noise -comes under this category.
  • It included developing, and promoting innovative financing solutions to create sustainable ocean-based economies.
  • Expanding nature-based solutions to help conserve and preserve coastal communities.
  • A strong signal is sent to improve the health immediately, sustainable use and resilience of the ocean.
  • Empowering women and girls to recognize their participation is crucial to building a sustainable ocean-based economy and achieving the UN-mandated sustainable development goal.
