The Piprahwa Gems — Buddhist relics taken in 1898 by a British national from their original resting place in India — have now been returned to the country. This was made possible through a public–private partnership facilitated by the Ministry of Culture. Revered by Buddhists worldwide, these relics hold immense spiritual significance and are considered among the most remarkable archaeological discoveries in Indian history. The sacred Piprahwa relics stand among the most spiritually and archaeologically important discoveries ever made. After 127 years, their repatriation marks more than a historical return — it is a profound symbol of India’s enduring cultural heritage and an example of its soft power diplomacy.

Originally unearthed in 1898 by British civil engineer William Claxton Peppé in Piprahwa, Uttar Pradesh, the relics are believed to contain the mortal remains of Lord Buddha. These include bone fragments attributed to Buddha, crystal caskets, gold ornaments, diamonds, and a sandstone coffer. One of the caskets bears an inscription in the ancient Brahmi script, linking the relics directly to the Sakya clan — Buddha’s own lineage — suggesting that his followers enshrined these remains in the 3rd century BCE. Further excavations by the Archaeological Survey of India between 1971 and 1977 uncovered additional steatite caskets containing 22 sacred bone relics, which are now preserved at the National Museum in Delhi.
