Indian Revenue Services handle administrative revenue—a position in the Indian government's civil service. Revenue collected for growth, governance and security is one of the IRS's primary sovereign tasks, which it performs for the nation's benefit. It is run by a Revenue Secretary and the Ministries Command under the direction of a Department of Finance Revenue Department. Indian Revenue Service (direct taxes) and the Indian Revenue Services (Indirect Taxes & customs). Both the Central Board for Direct Taxes & Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs are responsible for overseeing these (CBIC). 

 

Indian Revenue Services (Income Tax)

 

To address the issues brought on by the Indian Rebellion, dated 1857, British politician James Wilson Sir implemented the tax imposed in India in the shape of a taxable income in 1860. The Tax Act 1922 gave the various Income-tax authority a different name, but it wasn't until 1992 that the organisational structure of the Revenue Department began.

 

The Central Board for Revenue was founded in 1924 by Central Board for Revenue Act, and its primary duty is to oversee the administration of Income Tax. Each division now has an appointed taxation commissioner in charge of tax officers & assistant commissioners. Officers of an Imperial Public Service (ICS) held the highest jobs, while promotions via ranks filled lower levels. 

 

IRS (Customs and Indirect Tax)

 

The GOI Act of 1919, which divided its civil services into two sections, led to the creation of the AIS and the Central Services. These fall under the purview of the Indian Secretary of State. Essential parts of this include the Central Secretariat, Indian Posts & Telegraph Service, and Imperial Customs Service. After the nation gained independence in 1953, Imperial Custom Service was replaced by IRS (Customs & Central Excise).

 

With the passing of the constitution's first hundred first amendment and the introduction of a goods & services tax, India's indirect tax administration underwent a complete revamp (GST). Including many indirect levies and taxes, notably central excise duty & service tax under GST, the terminology was changed from IRS (Customs & Central Excise) into IRS (Customs & Indirect Taxes) to represent the current taxation system.
